Work Anniversary

Today marks one year of my working for The Salvation Army H.O.P.E. Village Program. It's been a great year. I've learned a lot, and while the honeymoon phase of work has long since passed, I still thoroughly enjoy the job. I love that God has given me a job that allows me to combine so many of the things I'm interested in. In just over a month we'll be able to celebrate having had clients for a year- now that will be exciting!

This past year I've finally started feeling like a professional. I am using my hard earned degrees and am helping both women and children get a fresh start in life. I've learned how to be an advocate- for someone other than myself. I've learned how to ask better questions and how to dig deeper to get the resources my clients need. And I've had moments of great humility, as I realize the depth of sacrifices my clients have made. And I'm just so proud of the hard work my clients are putting in.

Then there are my co-workers. In a job like this, you have to be able to joke and play. It simply makes work better and it makes us better workers. Add this to the fact that we're in a brand new office building, that has a few kinks to work out. Such as the front (and only) door getting stuck, inevitably leaving some of us locked inside (and outside)- on three different occasions. We've celebrated everyone's birthday by having birthday cakes (or donuts for me) with candles, and trashing desks (my desk is rather fragile, so I got an office full of balloons). And my desk has broken three times as well. It's rigged up pretty well right now, but I always think it's funny when it breaks.

Here's to another year!

Birthday Celebration...I walked in to 75 balloons all over the floor. I kept them there all day...at this point, the clients were still new and didn't know us well enough to think anything other than the fact that we were crazy.

This was the first time the door got stuck. Two were locked inside, and I got locked outside, which resorted in me climbing in through the window. Despite the fact that it was cold outside, I found the whole thing hilarious.

This is the second time the desk broke. It's the piece that rolls out and holds the keyboard that falls off each time. I'm able to create a makeshift desk without too many problems. Just like the door, I actually find this pretty funny too.
